Ionomycin (NSC 658174) is a selective calcium ionophore with specificity Ca²⁺ > Mg²⁺ > Sr²⁺ = Ba²⁺. At 2 μM, it increases intracellular Ca²⁺ from 50 to 180 nM in LCLC 103H cells. It inhibits growth of HT1376 bladder cancer xenografts and induces apoptosis. Ionomycin is a polyether antibiotic isolated from Streptomyces conglobatus. In research, it is widely used to mobilize intracellular calcium, to activate T‑cells (with phorbol esters), and to study calcium‑dependent signaling pathways.
